Gurbax Singh Malhi

Biography

The Honourable Gurbax Singh Malhi is a man of character who not only listens to his constituents but stands up for them in the House of Commons. Mr. Malhi puts the interests of his constituents first on issues ranging from the price of gas to increased infrastructure investment for Brampton.

Just recently, Mr. Malhi voted against Bill C-50, legislation that has given the Minister of Immigration the power to designate who should be allowed into Canada, and who should not. Furthermore, since 1993, Mr. Malhi has provided reliable, accessible and efficient service to his constituents.

Mr. Malhi has held constituent meetings every Friday where he personally sits and listens to the concerns of the people of Bramalea-Gore-Malton. Mr. Malhi has not only dealt with the issues himself but has raised issues important to the community with caucus, committees, with cabinet Ministers and directly with the Prime Minister.

Mr. Malhi is a dedicated parliamentarian. He attends over 500 community meetings and events annually including municipal, provincial, cultural, and social events.

In government, Mr. Malhi has served as:

•    Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue
•    Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development
•    Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry with Special Emphasis on Entrepreneurs and New Canadians
•    Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour.

Past Committee Work:


Mr. Malhi currently sits on, and has served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of, the Standing Joint Committee on the Library of Parliament.

He has served as a member of the Standing Committees on: Industry; Scrutiny of Regulations; Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights; Government Operations; Procedure and House Affairs; Human Rights and the Status of Persons with Disabilities; Human Resources Development; Code of Conduct; Government Operations


He has also served as a member of the following subcommittees:

•    Agenda and Procedure of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilties;
•    Human Rights and International Development;
•    Agenda and Procedure of the Standing Joint Committee on the Library of Parliament; Business of Supply

Awards

In 2002, Mr. Malhi was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for his commitment and contributions to Canadian society.

Business Experience:

Between 1985 and 1993 Mr. Malhi was a successful real estate agent for commercial, industrial, and residential properties. During that period he was active with the Toronto Real Estate Board and Canadian Real Estate Association.

Past Parliamentary Association memberships include: Canada-Europe, Canada-Japan, Canada-United Kingdom, Canada-USA, Canada-China Legislative Association, and the Canadian Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Past Friendship group memberships include: Canada-Germany, Canada-Israel, and Canada-Italy. Mr. Malhi was also founder of the Canada-South Asian Friendship Group.

Education:

Mr. Malhi earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Punjab University in India. He was editor of the English section of the university's student magazine.

•    Post-Tsunami Asia Trip in 2005: After visiting Thailand and Sri Lanka, Mr. Malhi traveled with Prime Minister Paul Martin to India.
•    Traveled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in 2005
•    Trade Mission to India in January 1996 with Prime Minister Jean Chretien
•    Trade Mission to Taiwan with other Canadian legislators and captains of Industry
•    Delegate on Mission to Brazil with Senate House Leader and other MPs
